Archos 101

Archos 70

Galaxy TAB

1) Memory

Archos 101 memory is 8 GB or 16 GB plus there is going to be an external Micro SD slot. This slot is SDHC compatible that means up to 32 extra GB of space (not bad at all!!!)

There are 2 versions of the same tablet. The first one with a 8 GB flash memory + Micro SD Slot (SDHC compatible). The second with a good size hard drive ( 250 GB). Yes, 250 GB!.

The Galaxy TAB is small but it has 16 GB or 32 GB plus an external Micro SD slot. This slot is SDHC compatible that means up to 32 extra GB of space (similar to the Archos 101 but nothing compared to the Archos 70 with hard disk)

2) Display characteristics

It is a 10.1” high resolution touch screen (1024×600 pixels) that looks as good as the iPad screen. Of course it is difficult to express a real opinion without a direct contact but the videos available on youtube are quite amazing!

The display is a 7 inches high resolution screen (WVGA 800 x 480 pixels) with 16 million colors. Slightly different from the 101 but still very good.

3) “Powerful” Engine = Application Framework + Processor + Graphic accelerator

The common Android (Android 2.2 Froyo) system is powering the Archos 101 and working in team with a powerful processor (ARM Cortex A8) and a 3D graphic accelerator (3D OpenGL ES 2.0)

The Archos 70 has the same engine of the Archos 101 (Processor: ARM Cortex A8 at 1 GHz with DSP. Graphic accelerator: 3D OpenGL ES 2.0

The Galaxy TAB has a 1GHz Processor with PowerVR SGX540. Not sure about a technical comparison with the Archos 70 but I have tried it today in an O2 shop and the feeling was very good!

What can you use these tablets for?

A straight answer will say that they are very similar in what you can do with them but the Galaxy TAB offers something that only the iPad offers…

…internet connectivity through EDGE or GPRS on top of the usual WiFi and this means that you can really enjoy yourself everywhere (you do not need a WiFi Spot like for the Archos)

5) SURFING: everywhere only with the Galaxy TAB (GPRS and EDGE protocols )

How long does it last?

At this point a question …very important…How long can I enjoy myself? The battery last long enough also if you are watching a video. The company declares a video playback time of 7 hours (…I really hope you do not need more to commute to work… a couple of hours guarantee you enough suffering…you do not need more…)

In a test conducted with low backlight the Archos 70 performs quite well. Music playback time is up to 36 hours but it drops to 10 hours for web surfing and even more to 7 hours for video playback.

Similar to the Archos 70 the Samsung Galaxy TAB has an autonomy of 7 hours for video playback.

Size is the main difference

Archos 101 is the larger and heavier (the 10 inches bring the weight up to 480 g)

Proportional to the reduction in size, the Archos 70 is lighter 300 (11 oz) grams  for the flash memory version or 400 grams ( 14 oz) for the version with hard disk.

Weight for the Galaxy TAB is 380 g. This make the tabled almost equal to the Archos 70

Final impression

While the Archos 101 competes nicely with the iPad in term of size and apps the new Galaxy TAB is the iPads little brother in term of connectivity. The choice is difficult and knowing your needs (where you are going to use them and for what) is the only way to decide which tablet is going to be right for you.

Price …of course will have its influence (…will it not?…)

BORING (VERY!) TECHNICAL REVIEW

The essential characteristics of this device include memory, display and engine. The display is important because it is what you watch and what you touch, the memory consent or not to store what you want on the device and the engine (OS + Processor + Graphic accelerator) limits or empower you and your device.

Closer look at the essentials

1) Memory (product capacity)

What can you use this tablet for (if you are commuting long hours I think this is what you will enjoy!)

Watch your preferred videos (it does not matter if it is the last movie you have downloaded or the video message your boss sent to the company…your boss will be delighted…). The videos could be MPEG-4 HD (up to 720p, 30 fps@6Mbps), MPEG-4 (ASP@L5 AVI, up to DVD resolution, 30 fps@8Mbps), H.264 HD (HP@L3.1 up to 720p, 30 fps@5Mbps), WMV9/VC1 (AP up to 720p 30 fps@10Mbps), M-JPEG (Motion JPEG Video) in VGA resolution… Lots to say almost anything you want but if you are not happy there are also optional plug-in you can download from www.archos.com (MPEG-2 AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, WMV, MPG, PS, TS, VOB, FLV, RM, RMVB, ASF, 3GP )

2)    MUSIC

Listen to the preferred music, motivational speech, news or really anything you want (…never bored again…!)in MP3 , WMA, WMA-Pro 5.1, WAV (PCM/ADPCM) , AAC, AAC+ 5.1, OGG Vorbis, FLAC. Again with optional plug-in (if you really need it) AC3 5.1

3) PHOTOS

Watch you photos of the fantastic weekend (not good on Monday because it will fuel your stress response…and might kill you)  or better to show the photos to your envious friend/colleague (beautiful girls or better waves if you are surfing…for real…)

4)    APPLICATIONS

Spend a bit of time with the pre-installed applications (not really exciting…to be fair…): Aldiko, Ebuddy, Wikipedia, Avecomics, HubKap, Deezer, Mewbox, Raging Thunderlite (a 3D car demo game), WordNewspaper, Touiteur, Fring

5)    SURFING

Surf the web (this is really amazing)…open access to everything you desire…everywhere…( I can’t wait…!!). Surfing is powered by a WiFi (802.11 b/g/n)

How long does it last?

Connections

Finally, contrary to the iPad this tabled is not a monk isolated on the top of a mountain with only one way in/out. Archos 101 has a real USB 2.0, a HDMI output ( Warning! Mini HDMI / HDMI cables are sold separately) and Bluetooth 2.1 EDR.

The first impression is very good! Archos 101 seems to perform very well, good display and the reaction time of the touch screen is amazing!

Still available and still very good (I do have one…) is the Archos 5 of course now you can compare it to the Archos 101 and realize that it does not match the competition. The Archos 101 is definitely better. Check it out on Amazon.comor on Amazon.co.uk

If you do not want to wait for the Archos 101 that is coming in October or better you might want to stop waiting, buy and iPad (strongly not suggested…just for kidding)

iPad vs Archos 101: Display

    Hi,

    interesting is that both screen have a very high resolution. The Archos 101 has  1024×600 pixels while the iPad 1024 x 768. Is this small different significant? The reality is that we have to place the two tablet pc on the same table with the same condition of light and then decide which monitor looks brighter, clearer…. If you have ever compared a flat screen TV you know what I mean. Independently from the technical specs you want to see them and compare them (better in a showroom…)

    The size is similar with the Archos slightly bigger than the iPad 10.1 inch vs 9.7.

    I am everyday more interested to see and likely buy the Archos and the iPad…just kidding!
